Robert Leroy Brannan, 82, of Evart

Robert Leroy Brannan, 82 of Evart, passed away on July 27, 2024 at Mission Point of Big Rapids. Robert was born on March 11, 1942 to the late Elmer and Hattie (Meeks) Brannan, in Carrollton, Illinois and raised in White Hall, IL where he graduated from White Hall High School in 1963.

On August 26, 1967 he married Drucilla Ann Hotchkiss in Waterford, and together they made their home in Oakland County where they raised their family. Robert and Drucilla were active members of the North Auburn Hills Baptist Church before moving to Evart in 2004.

Robert worked as a fabricator/welder in a machine shop for many years. He enjoyed the complete process of reading blueprints to building the final product. His talent for welding came naturally, and there weren't any metals that he was incapable of bonding. Much like the love and bond that his heart held when it came to his family. As a close-knit family, they made many lasting memories by fishing together on the Mississippi River and getting together to play guitar and sing country and gospel songs. As an old car enthusiast, he enjoyed attending car shows. Robert and Drucilla shared an incredible loving marriage of over 57 years. Together, they enjoyed traveling, attending the Dulcimer Festival and faithfully serving the Lord at the First Baptist Church in Evart.

Content and easy going, known by many as the nicest man anyone would ever want to meet, Robert will be dearly missed. Left to treasure the memories they have are: his children, Douglas E. Brannan of Evart, Christopher (Mandy) Brannan of Cheyenne, WY, and Jenifer (David) Parkinson of Davison, MI; six grandchildren, Celeste (Jamieson “Jay” Hughes) Crossley, Heidi Parkinson and Cameron, Caitlyn, Logan and Jayden Brannan; three brothers: Gene (Judy) Brannan of Greenview, Illinois, David Brannan of Columbia, Tennessee, Ronnie (Sandy) Brannan of Granite City, Illinois; two sisters: Carmen Lawson of Hillview, Illinois, and Paula Inman of Roodhouse, Illinois and many extended family members and friends.

Robert was preceded in death by: his loving wife, Drucilla and parents, Elmer and Hattie.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, August. 1st, from 11 AM until the time of service at 2PM at the First Baptist Church in Evart with Pastor Ryan Bielfuss officiating. Bob will be laid to rest at Christian Memorial Cemetery in Rochester Hills, MI at 11 AM on Friday, August 2nd.

Kaye Elaine (Otto) Hassen, 84, of Big Rapids

Kaye Elaine (Otto) Hassen passed away in her home on July 21, 2024 from Alzheimer’s Disease. She was born April 7, 1940 to Winnie (Grubbe) and Harvey Otto, the youngest of seven children. She spent most of her school years in Big Rapids, Michigan, and her senior year in Ferndale, where her father pastored a church.

Kaye was truly a Lady. She was kind, classy, graceful, loving, with a little bit of an edge. She believed in God and in compassion and forgiveness. In times of trouble, she would show up for others to talk to, lend a hand, or hold a hand. She rolled with the punches, loved to laugh, and could give as good as she could take a good-humored ribbing. She was Mom to many, her children and their children, foster children, and many others who came through her door and into her loving arms. She had a way of making people want to be close to her and a way to make people stop in their tracks with one sharp glance. Even as she lost her memories, Kaye retained her strong personality, joking, laughing, and being a love until her final days.

Prior to her illness, she cared for her ailing husband and sister, Karolyn, and she was an active board member of The Woods Free Methodist Church in Stanwood, where she took joy in community work and fellowship with good friends. She enjoyed the beauty of nature, as well as working in her flower garden, reading, playing and listening to piano music, researching genealogy, making delicious cakes and candies, lounging in the sun (especially at the beach), going barefoot, taking planned and spontaneous road trips, playing cards with her Sam, holding babies, and hanging out with her loved ones. She enjoyed watching programs like car racing, X games, funny home videos, vocal competitions, and the Olympics. She could shoot hoops and toss firewood with the best of them. She kept her house ship-shape, and was an eagle-eye with a dead-shot and a lead-foot.

Kaye is survived by sister Karolyn "Midge" Otto; son Marc Hassen and daughter-in-law Joyce; daughter Kara Howe and son-in-law, Robert Howe III; daughter Karla Kelch; son Robert Hassen and daughter-in-law Jody; daughter Devon Saker and partner Lauren; and her many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Kaye was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Samuel Hassen, and her siblings, Keith “Keeter", Kenneth, Kalvin “Punk", Katherine “Tillie", and Karl.

Found in her personal effects was a handwritten note, with “FOR MY OBIT” across the top. It is the poem, After-Glow, by Henry Lawson:

I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one.

I’d like to leave an afterglow of smiles when day is done.

I’d like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways,

Of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days.

I’d like the tears of those who grieve to dry before the sun.

Of happy memories that I leave behind when day is done.

A memorial graveside service will be held at the Chippewa Lake Cemetery on August 30th, 2024 at 11am. We will be looking forward to celebrating her life with you.

In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer donations to help with Kaye’s final expenses. Please follow this link to donate: https://gofund.me/627c0254

Theodore Rex Salinas, 11, of Big Rapids

Sometimes in life there are accidents that take the life of a loved one and leave those who survive with a broken heart. By the grace of God, in time broken hearts are mended and the loved one lives on through the memories of those who survive.

Theodore Rex Salinas passed, into the arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on Thursday, July 18, 2024, at home. While Theodore will be immeasurably missed, his family expresses their gratitude to God for the time they had with him, and the impact he had on those who truly got to know him.

Theodore was born on August 31, 2012 in Big Rapids, Michigan to Jonathan & Darcy (Daggy) Salinas, where he was raised until 2015, when the family moved to Evart. While not quite twelve, Theodore, has been known most of his life as an “Old Soul”. He was a kind hearted boy who acted wise for his age.

He was a voracious reader, with the unique gift of committing to memory most of what he read. At an early age he devoured information about tractors and farming. Eventually that interest shifted to history, and warfare, and most recently ducks and poultry. If you took the time to talk with Theodore, the conversation probably would have resulted in you listening. Most times he got to the point, in his own roundabout way. Those with time to listen, typically couldn’t help learning something new. His ability to tell stories sometimes left you wondering if they were fact or fiction.

Theodore loved time spent with family. He was his mother’s skiing partner, his father’s hockey companion, and his younger brother, Oliver’s, closest friend. He loved his grandparents, and jumped at the opportunities to help them cut wood, work with sheep, or accompany them to horse shows.

When he wasn’t with his family, and his hands weren’t holding a book, Theodore enjoyed: classic rock, his countless animals, most especially the ducks he raised, as well as; participating in 4-H, playing Pop Warner Football, and recently kyaking and fishing. Theodore loved his church family at Crossroads. He was always by his parent’s side wanting to serve. It didn't matter whether that was frying bacon, making coffee, or handing out hot chocolate. You couldn’t attend Crossroads and be indecisive on your choice of tea, without Theodore being there to offer a recommendation.

Theodore lives on through those around him. His family includes: parents, Jonathan and Darcy; his brother, Oliver; paternal grandparents, Alan and Rae Marie Salinas; maternal grandparents, Sheri and John Frick and Danny and (Joan Wolverton) Daggy; paternal great grandparents, Andres and Doris Salinas; numerous, aunts, uncles, extended family, friends and everyone else he adopted along the way.

Theodore was preceded in death by his great grandparents Duane and Lorraine Daggy, Russell and Norma Bunger, Otto and Anna Frick, and Rex and Joan Cruikshank (whom Theodore Rex was named after).

A celebration of life will be held on Friday, July 26th at 5 PM with visitation beginning at 3:30 PM at Crossroads Community Church, 110 S. Main St., Evart (231) 734-1100. Pastor Rob Rounds will be officiating. With Theodore's sudden passing it is unknown at this time how donations will be used to memorialize him.

Donations can to be left at Crossroads (or crossroadsevart.org) where a fund has been established in Theodore's name; for online giving, there is a drop down menu with a giving option towards the Salinas Family. Arrangements and care have been entrusted to Corey Funeral Home in Evart. Share with us online at www.coreyfuneralhome.com

Marilyn McLachlan, 92, of Evart

Marilyn McLachlan of Evart passed away on Thursday, July 4, 2024, at Reed City Corewell Long Term Care, surrounded by her children.

She was born Marilyn Joy Bennett on March 19, 1932, to Edith and George Bennett, and raised by her mother in Livonia. Joy was the perfect middle name to describe what she brought to her friends and family throughout her life. As a teenager, she boarded the train in Livonia and rode to Lake City, where she adored her campers as their counselor. After marrying and moving near Evart, she held positions at the Cadillac Mercy Hospital, the Reed City Hospital, Gardner-Denver Company, and directed the Osceola County Commission on Aging. She was active in community life, serving on the Bennett School school board, leading 4-H groups, participating in Evart community choral groups, and helping founder of the Evart Encores community theater program and the Evart School Band Boosters. After her children were grown, she earned a degree in media technology from Ferris State University, and accepted a position with Edison University near Ft Myers, Florida.

In 1978, she married her husband of 36 years, Archie McLachlan, and the devoted couple split their lives between Ft. Myers and Negaunee Lake and the farm, until retiring to Ft. Myers. There, she served on the Homeowners Association Board, and welcomed family and friends to Florida with open arms. In addition to completing the Bennett family genealogy in the days before computers, she crafted a trip to Scotland where she and Archie visited the ancestral McLachlan castle and met with the current heir. They returned full time to Evart in 2012.

An avid reader and a traveler, Marilyn wrapped her life in both. She read hundreds of books, and supported libraries wherever she went. Her fondest travel memories began with a childhood trip to Washington D.C. with her mother. With her friend, author Pat Leinbaugh, she traveled to Austria to support Pat’s son’s motorcycle racing. As part of her Ferris years, she studied the Southwest, hiking down into the Grand Canyon. She organized trips across the nation to bowling tournaments, traveled not only to Scotland with Archie but throughout Europe and all across America, and instilled a love of travel in her children. After Archie’s passing, she loved to relax by the Muskegon River and listen to its music.

A devoted and supportive mother, she is survived by her children, her grandchildren and their families: Kathy Scott (David Van Burgel) of Norridgewock, Maine and Evart; Karla (Richard) Anderson of Evart and Alan Scott of Ketchikan, Alaska; 13 great grandchildren; her step-children, Chris Comer of Evans, CO, Rosie (Mike) McKinstry of Evart, Cal (Deb) McLachlan of Brighton, CO, Pam (Winston) Cowans of Warren, MI, and Deanna (Dave) Shrum of Clawson, MI; her step-grandchildren and their families, and her step-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: her husband and by her son, Burton Scott Jr.;  granddaughter, Megan Anderson; daughter-in-law, Laurianne Scott; as well as her parents, sisters, and brothers.

A special thanks to the thoughtful staff at Corewell Reed City Long Term Care for four years of warm, skillful care.

Visitation will be held at 11am at Corey Funeral Home in Evart with funeral services beginning at 1pm on Tuesday, July 9th, and conclude with a celebration of life at the Evart Moose Lodge. Donations can be made to the Evart Public Library where a fund has been established in her name.

Gene Joseph Kardos, 64, of Big Rapids

On June 27, 2024, our brother, uncle, dear friend and loved family member’s life ended, filling our hearts with sadness.

His love of life, generosity, and beautiful smile were the reasons so many people called him friend. He was the life of the party and first to help anyone who needed it. He will be missed by so many.

Gene was born March 8, 1960, in Big Rapids, MI. His life adventures took him from Michigan to California to Texas and back. He graduated from Big Rapids High School in 1979 and resided in the area ever since. We knew him as a master mechanic (could fix or build almost anything), a “milkman” for Dean Foods, a trucker, and most recently as the crushed concrete guy. He worked hard his entire life.

Gene is survived by his sister Teri Chambers (Bob McCarthy), niece Casey (Mike) Gascon, and Angie Kardos of TN. Always close in his heart were D’Anna, Jessa, Rachel and Ron Trombley, who thought of him as Dad as he co-parented them with Cindy Trombley. He leaves many more nieces, nephews, and cousins. He came from the Battle family of Paris, MI, so the family who loved him was vast. Gene’s parents were Dorothy (Battle) and LaVern Kardos who proceeded him in death, as well as brothers Kenneth and Larry Kardos, nephew Derek Kardos, and niece Jessica Kardos of TN.

He often talked about his “brothers from another mother”: Darrell, Chuck, Steve, George, Paul, Greg, Gary, and Steve —as they worked, played, and rode their Harleys. Are there Harleys in Heaven? Brenda (Sally), Ellen, Marielle, RuthAnne, Julie, and Mary Beth get gold stars as they attempted to both “Mother” Gene and guide his life, while filling his stomach.

We will celebrate his life with a prayer service at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at St. Anne’s Catholic Church (22949 22 Mile Road, Paris, MI.) A celebration of Gene’s life will be held from 2:00 -5:00 p.m. at the Green Charter Township Hall (21431 Northland Drive Paris, MI) following the service. Care and arrangements are entrusted to the Mohnke Janowicz Funeral Home in Big Rapids.

Vivian R. Foster, 91, of Evart

Vivian R. Foster, age 91, of Evart, passed away at home, on Wednesday, July 3, 2024. She was born on April 9, 1933, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to Archie and Leota (Huffman) Wilson. On May 24, 1952, shortly after graduating from Barryton High School, Vivian married Aubrey Foster in Barryton and they raised their children in Newport, MI. Upon Aubrey's retirement in 1985, they moved back to Evart.

Vivian was a devout Christian and a member of the Ogilvie Wesleyan Church where she taught Sunday School. She was also a former den mother, a 30 year member of TOPS 1541, and active with the Commission on Aging. When Vivian was able she enjoyed: cake decorating, baking, quilting, and sewing. Over the years she donated many cakes and loaves of bread for church functions. Vivian loved to go places and enjoyed color tours in the fall and trips to Branson and Florida. She was joyful, kind, had a good sense of humor, and never said a bad word about anything.

Vivian may have raised five children, but a lot of people thought of her as “mom”. She is survived by: three daughters, June (Norman) Bruske of Evart, Deborah (Samuel) Johnson of Evart, and Donna (Robert) Hayes of Whitmore Lake; two sons, Allen (Brenda) Foster and Keith Foster all of Evart; 16 grandchildren 18 great grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren with two on the way; one sister, Darlene Brasington and husband, Ed Purtill of Mount Pleasant and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Vivian was preceded in death by: her husband, Aubrey on December 27, 2003; parents, Archie and Leota, and six siblings, Delbert, Eleanor, Norma, Beulah, Darwin “Butch”, and Archie “Fred”.

Funeral services will take place on Monday, July 8th at the Corey Funeral Home in Evart, at 2:00 p.m. with visitation beginning at noon. John "Coach" Bennett, 84, of Evart

John "Coach" Bennett, 84, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by family, on June 19, 2024. Born on December 15, 1939, in Jonesville, Michigan, to Arthur and Alma (Shrock) Bennett, he was one of six children. Growing up in a large family instilled in him a deep appreciation for the importance of family, and he often shared fond memories of the joyful times spent with his siblings and friends.

Coach graduated from Mendon High School in 1957 and earned a Bachelor's degree in Education from Western Michigan University in 1963. Proud to be a Bronco, he embarked on his teaching and coaching career in Evart, Michigan, where his passion for education and mentorship quickly became evident. He earned the nickname "Coach" by dedicating himself to coaching baseball, basketball, football, and track, and his genuine care for each student left a lasting impact.

Shortly after beginning his career, he married Evart local Judy Pritchard, and together they raised two children, Kraig and Nicole. Despite a busy schedule, Coach always made time for his family, embodying the role of a loving husband and father.

Coach Bennett had a deep love for the Evart community. Known for his friendly demeanor, he was often seen downtown, sharing stories and laughter over coffee with friends and locals. Though it seemed he ran a landscaping business with all the edging, mowing, and plowing he did, it was simply his way of helping out.

At Calvary Baptist Church, he was affectionately known as the "candy man" for the generous amounts of candy he handed out every Sunday. His love for God and his church was as evident as his love for people.

After retiring from over 30 years of teaching at Evart Public Schools, Coach continued to serve the community by working at Corey Funeral Home until his passing. Retirement was never in his vocabulary; he found purpose and meaning in comforting others and helping them through their loss and pain. His lifelong dedication to serving others kept him positive and full of life.

Coach Bennett was an extraordinary man, deeply loved and respected by all who knew him. His kindness and generosity left an indelible mark on everyone he met. He is survived by: his wife of 57 years, Judy Bennett of Evart; his children, Kraig Bennett of Evart and Nicole (Kent Bergstrom) Bennett of Mt. Pleasant, MI; his siblings, Maureen Finlay of CA, Arleen (JoAnn) Bennett of TX, and Juanita (Stan) Marks of FL; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. He was preceded in death by: his parents, brother, Harold Bennett; and sister, Joyce McAlpine.

A private interment for the family was held at Forest Hill Cemetery on June 27, 2024. The Bennett family invites the community to celebrate Coach's life on July 27, 2024, at 1:00 PM at the Evart Middle School Gymnasium. Please wear your blue and gold and fill the room with Wildcat pride, just as Coach would have loved.

To honor Coach, attendees are asked to bring a 3x5 card with a story or memory of him to display at the celebration. Those unable to attend may mail or drop off their cards at Corey Funeral Home, 415 N. Main, PO Box 506, Evart 49631
